 SUPPLIES I USE

In this section of my website, I am providing you with a list of products that you see me use in my art and instructional videos. Click "more" under each section to see demonstrations.

Liquin

Liquin is compatible with oil paint and color pencil and I use this VERY USEFUL gel as a medium for any artwork that includes these two mediums.

Liquin Original

Liquin Original

This reliable favorite (formerly known simply as "Liquin") is a general-purpose low gloss medium that improves flow and transparency. It mixes easily with the brush or knife, smoothes brushwork, and is also suitable for textured oil techniques. Liquin Original approximately halves the drying time of oil colors, resulting in a drying time of anywhere from one to five days, depending on climate, colors used, and film weight. It is not recommended as a varnish or final coat.

Prismacolor Art Stix (and blender)
Prismacolor Art Stix

Prismacolor Art Stix

Prismacolor Art Stix are artist-quality woodless colored pencils for every level of expertise. They contain high-quality pigments for rich color saturation, with soft cores that equal the creamy consistency of Prismacolor Premier Colored Pencils for superior blending and shading. Especially suited for color coverage of large areas, Art Stix offer a bold, smooth laydown of color. They measure 3¼" × ¼" (82 mm × 6 mm) and can be sharpened to a point for detailed work. They’re available in a range of colors that matches Prismacolor’s Premier Colored Pencils, Verithin Colored Pencils, and Watercolor Colored Pencil palettes.

Paper

Below is a link to the paper that I use. I use Borden and Riley "Bleedproof" paper (108lb.) Direct Link:

Borden & Riley Paris Bleedproof Paper For Pens

Borden & Riley Paris Bleedproof Paper For Pens

The smooth, hard surface of Paris paper is a convenient and economical alternative to bristol board. Brilliant white, crisp, and bleedproof, it is the ideal surface for detailed pen-and-ink illustrations rendered for reproduction with crowquill pens, broad drawing pens, calligraphy, or fountain pens. Each pad contains 40 sheets.

Transparent Illustration Markers- Prismacolor and Chartpak AD

A "staple" in all of my artworks is Illustration and Paint Markers. I like to use the illustration markers as a substitute for doing an underpainting, when creating a painting....but the Prismacolor and Ad Markers are great on their own. Click "MORE" to see me do a demonstration.

Prismacolor Premier Double-Ended Art Markers

Prismacolor Premier Double-Ended Art Markers

Designed for detailed work, these double-ended art markers feature an advanced dye-based alcohol ink formulation that ensures rich color saturation, impressive laydown, and smooth, silky ink flow. Each has two distinct nibs capable of achieving multiple line widths. Both ends draw from a single ink reservoir for a perfect color match end to end, making them ideal for both technical and artistic applications. Intended for professional artists and advanced students, they will not fade or feather. Stackable trays keep your markers organized. The range includes three full ranges of gradient gray color sets in Cool Gray, Warm, Gray, and French Gray.

Chartpak Ad Markers

Chartpak Ad Markers

These waterproof, permanent, solvent-based markers deliver brilliant sparkling color in fine point, medium weight, or broad strokes. Each marker contains a single nib with three distinct line weights. From crisply articulated tight comps to broadly expressive illustrations, one marker gives you all the lines you need.

Prismacolor Pencils

Perhaps, color pencils are the most underestimated artistic medium being used by artists today. Prismacolor, in my opinion, is the best brand of color pencil. It is highly pigmented and its binder mixes perfectly with oil paint and liquin (painting medium). I also love to use prismacolor pencils over a layer of illustration marker It is the only brand of color pencil that you will see me using in my videos. Click "more" for demonstration.

Prismacolor Colored Pencils

Prismacolor Colored Pencils

Our most popular colored pencils have thick, soft leads made from brilliant, light-resistant pigments. The colors are easily blended, slow to wear, and waterproof. Each round wooden pencil is lacquered to match the core. Buy a set and replenish your favorites with the individual pencils listed below. These pencils are sold unsharpened. Note — Manual sharpening is recommended for these pencils. Clogging can be prevented in electric sharpeners by periodically sharpening a graphite pencil to keep the blades clean.

A very useful tool! This will help an artist blend color pencils in a similar manner to paint.

Prismacolor Blender

Prismacolor Blender

The Prismacolor Colorless Blender uses a special formula to soften hard edges, and to lighten or blend colored pencils. Use it for a smooth, blended look. With the Colorless Blender, colors can be layered on top of each other without cloudy build up. This pencil is sold unsharpened. Note — Manual sharpening is recommended for this pencil. Clogging can be prevented in electric sharpeners by periodically sharpening a graphite pencil to keep the blades clean.

Opaque Paint Markers
Decocolor Paint Markers

Decocolor Paint Markers

These markers are great for signs, posters, and all kinds of crafts because they are solvent-based and dry instantly. Colors can be blended and are removed easily with turpentine. They are fully opaque on all porous and non-porous surfaces. They are also lightfast and weatherproof — excellent for temporary outdoor signage. Caution — Decocolor paint markers are not rated safe for children.

Hot Colors, Sets of 6

Believe me! This is helpful too, with paint markers!

Drawing Supplies

To do pencil drawings, I use 6B, 4B, 2B. HB, 2H and 4H Pencils. I use a tortillion (also known as a blending stump or blending stub). Occasionally, I use a kneaded eraser, but I tend to prefer the one at the end of a pencil more. These tools can be found on the links below. Click "more" If you wish to see one of my drawing demonstrations.

Oil Paint

Oil Paint is the most versatile artistic medium. It can be applied in thin transparent glazes or thick opaque coats, with a wide range of possibilities in between. It is easy to mix a wide range of colors, tones and chromas with oil paint and it is possible to work in multiple layers; once the previous layer dries. My favorite oil paints are: 1.) Old Holland- Intense pigmentation and a wide variety of colors and opacities/transparencies. 2.) Gamblin- More cost effective than Old Holland. Pigmentation is equal to Old Holland, but the consistency of the paint is a slight grade below (in my opinion). 3.) Rembrandt- Cost effective, but quality paint. Click "more" to see a short painting tutorial that I did.

Old Holland Classic Oil Colors

Old Holland Classic Oil Colors

Old Holland has been making artist colors since 1664, making it one of the oldest continuously operating companies in the art supplies industry. The company is known for uncompromising adherance to traditional techniques and standards. All color making is done by hand, and all processes are controlled by artists. Pigments are ground in stone rather than metal rollers, and colors are packaged in lead tubes rather than the more modern aluminum alloy tubes, which eventually oxidize and decay. Old Holland Oils are produced according to traditional recipes, those used for paintings made in the 17th century. These paintings retain the clarity of their colors to this day. That's durability. Like hundreds of years ago, only the best pigments and binders are used to produce very concentrated and light-fast paint, resulting in higher color strength, hiding power, and intensity. That goes for all 168 colors listed here. Only cold-pressed linseed oil from the first pressing is used for the binder. This optimizes oxidation (drying) of the paint and also promotes permanence. The brush strokes flow out better too.
